Diagnostic imaging

All Diagnostic Imaging (DI) is operated by fully qualified technologists. The department performs in the region of 31,000 examinations annually, in general radiography, gastric studies, ultrasound and mammography. A CT scanner will be arriving on-site in June of 2009 and will be operational by the fall. Anew radiologist is also expected this summer.

X-Ray

General radiology, gastric series, barium enemas and IVPs are regularly booked procedures. With rising ER activity, the X-ray department also performs many emergency exams. In addition to scheduled exams, the X-ray department performs approximately 8,000 emergency exams annually.

Renovation and additions planned for the department will provide the most up-to-date X-ray, filming and computer technology to lead the department into the future.  It is about to convert from film to digital imaging.

Ultrasound

The Diagnostic Imaging department also performs ultrasound examinations such as obstetrical, abdominal and now venous doppler. The two ultrasound machines are state-of-the-art and are in constant use. They were provided through community generosity.

Mammograph

A warm and welcoming ambiance awaits patients who come to the mammography unit at SMH. In a special waiting room, the calming atmosphere is complemented by an informative video and reading material which explains self-examination and the mammogram procedure.

The unit, which uses state-of-the-art equipment, conducted 2,938 examinations in 2005/06, including 1,965 exams through the very successful, accredited Ontario Breast Screening Program, which began in 1999. Women over 50 years may self refer to the OBSP by calling (705) 435-5208.

Bone Densitometry

Since introduction in 1997, the Bone Mineral Densitometry Program has grown substantially. In 2005/06, 1,600 exams were performed, up from 750 in the initial year.
