Operating room, Day surgery
OPERATING ROOM

The surgical suite is comprised of two OR theatres, one endoscope room and a recovery room.

The OR is used by several surgeons, including a full time general surgeon who was recruited to SMH in 2006. Surgical services are supported by both full time and associate anaesthetists and it provides service for both inpatients and outpatients.

Coverage is provided 24 hours a day by on-call physicians and nurses. Booked surgical cases are done Monday to Friday from 8 am to 4 pm.

In addition, surgical links are provided by Headwaters Health Care Centre in Orangeville, Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket and Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie.

A total of 2,870 surgeries took place in the OR in 2005/06.

DAY SURGERY

This unit handles 92 per cent of the surgical cases at SMH. It includes general surgery, gynaecology, orthopedics, eye surgery, ear nose and throat surgery, adult and pediatric dentistry as well as endoscopies.

The 10-bed Day Surgery unit is located across from the operating room suite.

There were 2,633 procedures in 2005/06, averaging about 200 month. Nursing staff also run a pre-admission clinic for surgical patients. Over 900 patients were seen in the clinic in 2005/06.

CSR

The central processing of sterile supplies for the hospital is done by the CSR. It manages sterilization and distribution of instruments and supplies to the operating room as well as the hospital's clinical areas.
