Diagnostic Imaging Program

The diagnostic imaging department provides a variety of diagnostic exams for inpatients, emergency patients and outpatients. These services include:

CT Scans

A computed tomography (C.T.) scan creates a series of images that detects conditions that are not detectable with conventional X-rays. A beam of radiation is set on the studied body and moves around the body, creating multiple cross sectional images. The patients must lie still to ensure the accuracy of the study.  C.T. scans are performed by Medical Radiation Technologists who have specific training in C.T. scanning.

X-Rays

X-rays are procedures that can be booked at Stevenson and include general radiology, upper gastrointestinal (UGI) series, and barium tests.

In addition to the above listed procedures, with increasing ER activity, the X-ray department also performs many emergency exams and performs approximately 8,000 emergency exams annually.

Ultrasounds
Ultrasound examinations include general, breast, obstetrical, some vascular ultrasounds, ultrasound guided biopsies, abdominal and venous doppler. There are two state-of-the-art ultrasound machines that were provided through community generosity.

Mammograms
Mammograms are used as a screening device for early detection of breast cancer and patients with a lump in their breast, or have an unusual discharge from their nipple. A mammogram is a radiograph (X-ray) of the breast and is free-of-charge for women in Ontario. Mammograms are used as a part of the Ontario Breast Screening Program.
The Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) is a part of Cancer Care Ontario. It provides mammography services for women who are 50 years of age or older

Women Eligible for Screening in the OBSP:
• Ontario residents
• 50 years of age and over
• No acute breast symptoms
• No personal history of breast cancer
• No breast implants

Stevenson has conducted 2,500 examinations in 2010. This includes 1,100 exams that were conducted through the very successful, accredited Ontario Breast Screening Program, which began in 1999. Women over 50 years may self refer to the OBSP by calling (705) 435-5208.

We are pleased to be moving to a digital mammorgraphy service in the fall of 2011. This will bring us state-of-the-art care and the ability to perform stereotactic breast biopsies.

In order to book an appointment for a mammogram, a referral from your physician is required. An appointment can be made by calling the Imaging booking desk at extension 5122.

Bone Densitometry
A bone mineral densitometry is the diagnostic process that uses a low dose X-ray instrument in order to measure the bone mineral content. This identifies those patients who have osteoporosis. Treatment may be needed in order to prevent fractures.

Echocardiography
Echocardiography, otherwise known as aheart sonogram, provides the cardiologist with moving images of the ehart, and notifies the doctor about whether or not there are any heart defects. Echocardiograms provide additional information in diagnosing an enlarged heart, ischemia, pericarditis, valve diseases, and chest traumas.
