Volunteering, a Rewarding Way of Life

How to Apply

All adult volunteers are members of the SMH Auxiliary. Interested persons should fill out an application form and submit it to the Auxiliary Office.  Thereafter, an interview will be arranged to further explore volunteer opportunities, discuss available positions and outline necessary steps in the volunteering process.

The Health Act requires everyone working or volunteering in a health facility to have a TB (Mantoux) test and all volunteers must attend an orientation.

Students are also invited to become volunteers through the SMH Auxiliary’s Youth Volunteer Program offered throughout the year. Interviews are arranged at the hospital and to help promote youth recruitment, each fall applications will be made available to our community high schools and the Auxiliary will hold a special youth volunteer information session at the hospital.  Student volunteers are required to commit to 12 months of service prior to validation that their 40 hours of community service has been fulfilled.  Students are also invited to become members of the Auxiliary after their student service is complete.

The Hospital Auxiliary

The Stevenson Memorial Hospital Auxiliary serves the hospital and community by:

  • Rendering volunteers services to Stevenson Memorial Hospital and its patients through ways approved or proposed by the governing board of Stevenson Memorial Hospital
  • Fostering, through public relations, greater community interest and understanding of the hospital
  • Raising funds for the Hospital through various activities approved by the governing board

Volunteers are an integral and valued part of Stevenson Memorial Hospital.

Approximately 180 volunteers contribute to the hospital and community by working in several departments or on various projects, providing thousands of hours of service annually to the hospital.

Where Can I Volunteer?

Ø  Patient Areas:  Volunteers support patients and their families in clinical departments at SMH (i.e. Emergency Room, Diagnostic Imaging and Day Surgery).

Ø  Non –patient Areas:  Volunteers support the organization in a variety of ways that are not directly related to patient care (i.e. Information Desk, Gift Shop and Coffee Corner).

Ø  Fundraising Events:  Auxiliary members conduct fundraising events throughout the year with proceeds going towards the purchase of capital equipment (i.e. Christmas-in-October Bazaar, Quilt Raffle and Tag Day).

Ø  Leadership Opportunities:  For volunteers who would like to expand upon their leadership experience, there are opportunities to become an Auxiliary Officer (i.e. President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer) or a Convenor that oversees a team of volunteers.

Volunteers make a difference:

Working with people and helping the hospital and community is rewarding. Anyone who can give their time is invited to become a part of our volunteer team.

If you wish to volunteer please print either the Adult Application Form or the Student Application Form and return the completed form to the address provided on the form or pick up a hard copy of the form at the Information Desk in the lobby of the hospital.
